Trauma Therapy in Hertfordshire
Specialist, trauma-informed therapy for adults living with PTSD, complex trauma and the long after-effects of childhood experiences. I'm Kate Ramsay, a BACP Accredited counsellor and EMDR therapist with 18+ years' experience, working from Knebworth in Hertfordshire and online.

You Might Recognise Some of This
- Feeling constantly on edge, jumpy or unable to settle
- Flashbacks, intrusive images or nightmares
- Numbness, dissociation or feeling detached from yourself
- Avoiding places, people or conversations that bring it back
- Shame, self-blame or a persistent sense of not being safe
- Difficulty trusting others or staying close in relationships
These are normal responses to abnormal experiences — not a sign that something is wrong with you.
How I Work With Trauma
My approach is integrative and paced. We begin with safety and stabilisation — understanding your nervous system, building grounding skills and steadying day-to-day life. Only then, and only if it's useful, do we move towards the memories themselves.
Depending on what fits, that might mean person-centred and relational work, parts work, psychoeducation about the body's threat response, or EMDR therapy for specific memories. Nothing is imposed — you set the pace throughout.
A Quiet Room in the Middle of Hertfordshire
Trauma work asks a lot of you, so where it happens matters. My therapy room in Knebworth is private, calm and separate from everyday life, with free parking nearby and the station a few minutes' walk away. Clients travel from Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City, Hitchin, Hatfield, Letchworth, Baldock, Hertford and St Albans, usually in well under half an hour.
If travelling feels like too much — which it often does when you're already depleted — online sessions are available anywhere in Hertfordshire and the UK. Many clients mix the two.
Trauma Therapy in Hertfordshire — Common Questions
What counts as trauma?
Trauma isn't defined by the size of the event but by how overwhelming it felt and how little support was available afterwards. Single incidents, childhood neglect, medical trauma, bereavement, bullying and long-term relational harm can all leave the nervous system on permanent alert.
Do I have to talk through everything that happened?
No. Detailed retelling isn't required and can sometimes be unhelpful early on. We build stability and grounding first, and you stay in charge of what is shared and when.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Complex or long-standing trauma is usually open-ended work reviewed regularly, while a single recent incident may resolve in a shorter, focused piece of work. We agree the shape of it together rather than committing to a fixed package.
Where are sessions held in Hertfordshire?
In-person sessions are in Knebworth, easily reached from Stevenage, Welwyn, Hitchin, Hatfield, Codicote, Datchworth and Woolmer Green. Online sessions are available across Hertfordshire and the UK.
What does trauma therapy cost?
Individual therapy is £85 per session and EMDR is £100 for 50 minutes. I'm also registered with BUPA, Aviva, WPA, AXA and Healix. See the fees page for the full list.
